Tony “Thunder” Smith is a world-renowned drummer, vocalist and producer, having worked with some of the most legendary artists of all time. Tony always displays a true drummer’s sensibility. Currently, he is a Professor of Percussion at Berklee College of Music in Boston where he brings into the classroom all his years of experience and understanding of all aspects of the recording and touring processes which has made him a top choice among producers worldwide.
Tony consistently brings his energy and distinct style to projects ranging from rock, pop, R&B, funk, fusion, latin, jazz and folk. Tony’s discography speaks of his ability to handle any and all kinds of musical challenges – from rock with Lou Reed to the hard driving jazz-fusion of the Jan Hammer Group, which he co-founded.
Tony has had the honor of performing for President Clinton, President Havel of the Czech Republic and Pope John Paul. His musical opinions are often sought by leading music publications and he has been featured in the book, “Sticks and Skins”, a compilation of world-renowned drummers.
Tony’s mark is his melodic approach to rhythm and ability to inject life into the music he performs. This is clearly evident when creating drum sequences or loops for artists’ albums. He has also been involved in a variety of film, commercial and musical projects both at home in the U.S. and internationally. He has done commercial soundtrack production and scored original music for film and television. Tony is also endorsed by major drum, cymbal and electronics companies.
